  • My Move

This is officially my last act in my home. Having been forced to move due to rediculous bills from Scottish Power. As yet they have not sent me my letter of deadlock. My belief is they are procrastinating over this letter of deadlock as they know that as soon as the Energy Suppliers Ombudsman gets this complaint from us, they (Scottish Power) will be forced into finding the fault and be forced to refund the money we have overpaid and compensate us for the poor service we have received over the last 8 years.

I do hope that one day I'll be able to move back into this house but not while the electric bills are at this level. I'm thankful that my new tenants are willing to help me in my fight against this grubby collection of theives, calling themselves an energy provider. It doesn't surprise me that they are now Spanish owned. Indeed it would have to be Spanish owned. The only people in the world I have issues with. I only have issues with the Spanish people as it is the only place in the world where anyone has tried to mug me. Imagine that - three Spanish teenagers trying to mug a 6'4" 20 stone Black belt 3rd Dan Kickboxer.
    But that is another story.

  • No News

It's the end of another week and again Scottish Power have failed to give us our letter of deadlock. Happily for me I seem to have my stress levels back under control before having to take the happy pills recently prescribed by my Doctor.

At least tomorrow sees an end to my unhappy association with Scottish Power. I know the problem still exists in the house, but perhaps if the tenants I have start to have higher bills than in their previous property then maybe something will be done.

I have fully informed my tenants of the problem, and they are willing to help out if they can. Maybe if they have problems too then someone will start to listen.

  • New Beginnings

Well, I passed the eye test and driving assessment for the Instructor College. So tomorrow I go to sign up for my course to become a driving instructor. It will be a big step for me as I've only ever been in nursing since I left the school. Other people have changed profession so I'm sure I'll be fine.

By the weekend I'll also be free from Scottish Power. That does not mean I'm giving up my fight, only that I'll no longer have them as energy providers. We are still waiting for the letter of deadlock from my incompetent friends at Scottish Power. I fear however that the problem lies with the 1 member of their staff with literacy skills. These skills are sadly rather rudimentary and coupled with an inability to spell means that they are having difficulty figuring out what deadlock means.

Anyway I am beginning to feel a bit more positive about the outcome, and my own future in general, it's a pity we have to leave the home we love, but it is just stupid to carry on paying these rediculous bills. I wonder how cheery christmas will be at Scottish Power since I won't be paying for the christmas bonus this year!!

  • Having a break or a breakdown???

Decided to try to have a break from anything "Scottish Power" related, however I failed. I spoke with my GP (a telephone appointment!!!) about things in general and more specifically my blood pressure, which has been playing merry hell with me over the last eight years. He's now decided that a telephone appointment is of no use and wants me to go in for blood tests and evaluation for a possible psychology referral. And that was just because I told him what I believe is the direct cause of my high blood pressure.

Also cleared some rubbish along to the local recycling centre. During this escapade my step-daughter almost did backflips out of the car to get away from a spider we must have picked up in the garage, when clearing out the crap.

My tedious, sullen, indifferent day reached a pinnacle as I sought to renew my road tax online. Took around 5 minutes to complete. Decided to try to update my driving licence online too, but alas was unable to find the existent one so gave up.

Have also decided to try a change of career, so went to the instructor college in Edinburgh yesterday. Had my 2 hour induction. Sounds really interesting so I'm going back again tomorrow to have my eye test and test drive. Following this it's then time to decide whether or not to go for it. So far, I think I will give the training a go if they think I'm capable.

  • Martin Brannigan Again

My wife phoned Martin Brannigan again today. She was lucky enough to catch him at work this time. She asked him about the letter of deadlock. He said that there was a lot of work still to be done on it but he would try to finish it up today and get it sent out. I suppose a week of procrastination from Scottish Power is a small price to pay.

Our shortened day yesterday did not result in any less electricity being used. We still managed to use 16 units of electricity in a 10 and half hour period as opposed to the 16 units used in the 26 hour period from the previous reading. Go figure!!

As a slight change from our usual daily routine we found ourselves in Edinburgh, and more precisely Tesco's in Corstorphine. However with electricity not too far from our thoughts we found ourselves buying more low energy light-bulbs. How sad is that!!!

  • What a waste!!

Well today was a complete waste of a short time! I unfortunately did not get out of bed until 14:33 hours. I hadn't intended to sleep so long it's just, well I think I'm suffering from stress related exhaustion, or something. I've never slept like that in my life before.

Anyway, I was 2 hours late in checking my electricity usage yesterday, so for yesterday I have to count it as a 26 hour day and I only used 16 units in 26 hours with nothing out of the ordinary being used. Remarkably on the 24th June this year I managed to use 17 units in a 24 hour period under the same circumstances i.e nothing out of the ordinary being used.

Equally, just in this last month alone, I have had days where I've used 16 units of electricity and the washing machine has been on twice, there have been 2 showers and the tumble drier has been used 3 times. I've also had days within the last month where the washing machine has been used twice as has the tumble drier without the shower being used, and we have used 19 units of electricity. When you then take into consideration the 27.5 units of electricity averaged when we were on holiday last year. It puts the problem more into perspective. And yet still Scottish Power don't seem to see the problem. What do I need to do to prove I don't use the amount of electricity they say I use???

  • Is it so difficult??

I've never really understood how some people can take a simple black and white fact and fail to comprehend it or worse still, find a bizarre alternative.

As an example: If today you go to Uswitch and type in that you are a single person living alone in a 3 bed-roomed, all electric, mid-terraced house with above average insulation and don't cook there every night. If Uswitch then say that all the energy companies that they check say 1 years worth of electricity now will cost between £354.00 and £574.18, then it stands to reason that 8 years ago if you used £432.00 for 3 months during summer and £437.00 for the next 3 autumn months then clearly something is wrong?

Another example: If your energy provider tells you that an average user of electricity uses between 9 and 15 units of electricity a day. And you consider yourself to be a low user as you have all low energy light-bulbs throughout your house, "A" rated energy efficient appliances, you never leave anything on stand-by and generally don't waste electricity. However you use 27.5 units of electricity a day with no-one in the house, because you are away on holiday and everything is switched off except you fridge and freezer. Then surely something is greatly amiss?

A further Example: If you live in the above detailed property, 3 bed-roomed, mid terraced, all electric house, above average insulation, but there are 3 of you living there. Uswitch say it could cost you between £561.77 and £991.28 per year. And if you lived in a detatched, all electric, 5 bed-roomed, house with poor insulation, and there were 5 people living in the house. Uswitch say it would cost you between £1071.52 and £2071.90. So how come it costs me in my 3 bed-roomed mid-terraced house with low energy bulbs and energy efficient appliances, with good insulation, and only 3 people living in it between £3773.00 and £4122.00 according to Scottish Power - surely that is clearly wrong?

Now if amongst this 2 things happen at around the same time, that being - your neighbours move out and you get a new meter fitted. Simultaneously you have a drop in you electrical consumption of a significant amount (say from 33 units daily average use to around 15 units average daily use), then one of these events has to be the cause. If subsequently your old meter tests within normal parameters at the hands of an independent examiner, then that leaves your neighbours moving out as the only significant event still in question. Again if at some point your local council puts a team of cleaners into your neighbours property, with industrial cleaners that run on electricity and your usage for that one day almost doubles - just for that day then goes back to normal, that would seem to verify the cause of your troubles as the wiring at the meter of the two properties which share a common feed to the mains. There is however a third option not considered by yourself as it is simply not the case, but is held as the truth by your electricity supplier - in this case Scottish Power. You are using less apliances in your house which is why your electrical usage is down - and that is just plain bizarre!!!

  • Another week goes by

My wife telephoned "billing expert" Martin Brannigan today, to find out why we have not as yet received our letter of deadlock. Guess what? Yeah, he wasn't available! On holiday it seems.

I am as yet still awaiting to here the outcome of Energywatch's investigation into the points I raised in the letter I did not send to them. No, you are reading it correctly I sent no letter, but they are investigating points I raised in this non-existent letter.

I am still waiting for a Direct Debit Mandate form from Adrian Edwards (Senior Something or other). I have kept my part of the agreement, but no action on their part.

  • What can I Say

Well here we are almost at the end of another week, and guess what? No letter of deadlock from Scottish Power. We were supposed to receive it this week, but it seems that Scottish Power have seen fit not to send it. Oh, I forgot, It might have been 'lost' in the post - like so many other letters allegedly sent from Scottish Power, that we never received.

I hope they get my letter about terminating their service, or is that going to get 'lost' too!!! When we move from my mothers house, we have a list of criteria that any prospective property must fulfil. Mostly to do with Scottish Power or lack there of.

  • Oh What a Surprise!!

My wife finally managed to contact "Billing Expert" Martin Brannigan from Scottish Power. He stated we will be getting our letter of deadlock. He also stated, however that Adrian Edwards did not agree to any figure with the Citizens Advice Bureau. That, I'll be able to check on as the woman from the citizens advice bureau took copious notes.

They have also stated that Stefan from Galshiels is now stating that he never agreed that there was a fault. A fact he admitted to both myself and my wife on separate occasions. Its funny how all these men are apparently experts in their field all working for an electric supplier and none of them know anything about electricity - admitted by themselves and certainly agreed upon by myself. Its curious how everyone I have spoken to at Scottish Power has suddenly developed amnesia. I'm now left wondering if I imagined all these conversations, however the facts remain in the bills I have paid and the daily readings of my electricity usage I have taken over the last 2 years.

On one point they are correct - paying £50.00 per month will barely cover the electricity we use now, however I have not sent out my letter telling them that their service will no longer be rquired as of the end of this month, therefore my £50.00 per month will start to pay off the "outstanding bill" at least that is until the courts decide the outcome.

  • Fresh Start

Have just finished writing my letter to Scottish Power asking them to terminate my supply as of 30/09/07. Will send it off in the morning. Have arranged the move to mothers house, although dad doesn't seem overly keen on the idea. I've told him it'll only be until we get the house sold, which will hopefully not take too long.

I feel slightly saddened that it has come to this, but I cannot go on year after year paying these huge bills. In my previous home I paid on average £240.00 a year. My wife averaged around £190.00 per year in her flat. Combined - we would be using £430.00 per year. I was expected to pay more than this for my first quarterly bill when I moved in here, alone, in the summertime - go figure!!

  • What's going on!!

Arrived home from work today and was greeted by my wife brandishing a letter. The said letter was type-written on Scottish Power headed note paper. However it was seemingly from someone in Energywatch. The letter was dated 11/09/07 and apparently was in answer to a letter sent to Energywatch - by me!! I haven't written to Energywatch since November last year as I recall. I generally telephone them. The last time I spoke to anyone at Energywatch was indeed on the 11th of September. I spoke to my case manager Pauline Armstrong who informed me that she no longer dealt with complaints but would pass my message onto the new case manager who is seemly called Monica. This letter is however from someone with a Gaelic name.

Co-incidentally we received a trio of telephone calls all from the same number, whilst at the Citizens Advice Bureau on Monday. No message was left, but I tried to call back. After 2 hours of the line being permanently engaged I gave up. Now this number called again today. Again no message was left, however my wife managed to intercept the second call from this number. The person said that they were either a Mr Broddigan or Mr Brannigan from Scottish Power, she could not make out which. He asked to speak to me, but obviously I was at work. He then asked her to say that he had called and hung up. Again following one and a half hours of this line being permanently engaged I gave up. So I haven't got a clue what is going on now.

This brings to mind a recurring thought from over the years. How do the likes of Utility companies expect people to pay bills if they were at home during business hours to take calls from them instead of being at work earning money to pay these rediculous amounts?

  • Frightening Thought

I was always brought up to believe that human society evolved and things generally changed for the better. However I now realise that I have been mislead all these years. It seems that some things never change. I have just found a BBC news article dated 3rd August 2005 see following link:-

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4741599.stm

Yes it seems some things never change. And that includes Scottish Power. We have decided that we are going to sell our house and move in with my mother as we cannot switch supplier. Scottish Power have already stopped us switching on one occasion. Therefore the only option I have left to me to stop these theiving bastards getting any more of my money is to stop using electricity myself and pay my mother for what we use.

I will continue to pay the outstanding amount until such times as we settle this through the judicial system. Again I was brought up to believe that the truth will always come out of any situation, and I hope this is no exception.

  • Supplimental

I have always maintained that there have been 2 possibilities to explain my current electrical situation (no pun intended). They have been that either the original wiring to the property has been cocked up and my neighbours house draws partial power from my supply or my meter was faulty and replaced with a fully functional meter. However a third option has just dawned on me.

When the new meter was fitted on the 10/04/07 we never saw it being fitted. At the time our attention was taken up by Ray Jackson from OFGEM and Johann Ellis of Scottish Power. We did not see what the electrician did. Did he alter something else whilst fitting the meter? Strange that my electrical usage has dropped since that date.

My wife also pointed out from our readings of the meter, that until the meter was changed there was a gradual reduction in our usage as we switched heating down then off. But from that day there was a sudden drop of 14 units per day. That amounts to an entire days worth of electricity for an average user.
I know what that suggests to me!!

  • The next Step

I have just finished writing a letter to the next line idiot (sorry I meant - manager) in Scottish Power, stating as the Citizens Advice Bureau suggested, my willingness to pay by direct debit. I have also requested a letter of deadlock. This is in keeping with the Energy Suppliers Ombudsman service. My wife has also requested this letter of deadlock by telephone.

We as a family took time last night to look at our situation, and have come to the descision that Scottish Power have succeeded in getting us out of the house we love. We know we are not high users, but cannot afford to pay the costs asked for year after year, by Scottish Power. We therefore are left with no option, but to move elsewhere. Selling this house in itself will bring its own problems, but we'll have to work through that.

Prior to moving into this house, I was a low user of electricity (atested to by previous billing). My wife too was a low user of electricity in her flat (again backed up by billing), before we moved in together. Now two low users don't get together and become the highest users of electricity in history, so therefore the wiring of the property to the mains is to blame. Also borne out by the high billing received by our next door neighbours at 108.

  • Scottish Power, Licenced to Steal!! Or Grubby little Street Thugs

I decided to contact the Citizens Advice Bureau today, as I am running out of ideas on how to deal with this situation. The woman I spoke to was astounded at the amount of money paid by me to Scottish Power over the period of my complaint. She asked Isn't that a bit excessive? She attempted to call them and was of course given the runaround. Eventually she was put through to someone who told her that we were considered bad payers. They had obviously either not been aware of the state of my account, or didn't know that we had previously been given a complete breakdown of our account from August 2000 to November 2006 by Rae Brown. This clearly shows all monies paid by me to Scottish Power. I say clearly, however it actually shows stupid entries such as - 11 months of direct debit payments as a single payment of £2200.

She asked this moron how he would explain the drop in our usage when our neighbours moved out. He apparently replied that it simply meant that we were using less electricity, ie. suddenly we stopped using 1/2 the appliances in our house. So in essence Scottish Power can simply say to anyone "you are using less appliances in your house and that is why your usage is down 50-66% on previous years" "It has nothing to do with your neighbours moving out."

She was then passed onto an Adrian Edwards who is seemingly a senior complaints advisor. As far as he was concerned we are liable to pay any outstanding amount despite contradictatory evidence, and they need do nothing. As I see it, using Scottish Power's own logic - they will not agree to us getting a direct feed to the mains as opposed to a split feed as this will 100% back my case and they will be forced to reimburse me all the money they have overcharged me throughout these eight years.

  • Legal Action

Today I arrived home from work to find a letter from LCS Civil Enforcements stating that they were instigating court proceedings against me on behalf of Scottish Power. I assume its for me as it does have my Scottish Power account number correct, but alas this does not extend to my name. This is despite me never having been given a final reminder or indeed told that they no longer consider me as "in dispute" with them.

This after they (Scottish Power) admit there is a fault. I am still waiting for this Stefan from the emergency services department to contact me. Martin Brannigan is supposed to be calling me back after Stefan has contacted me.

Now I have some nugget called Peter Jackson from LCS Civil Enforcements or 1st Locate(UK)Ltd 3 Leodis Court, Leeds, LS11 5JJ writing to me stating that legal action is to be taken. Why are these idiots(Debt Collectors) ever contacted by companies? They rarely ever have the correct information. I am inclined to allow court action to take place, as I believe I have very strong evidence to support my story and perhaps the courts would be able to force Scottish Power into action.

  • More Stupidity

Today I received a phone call from my old friend Martin Brannigan at Scottish Power. He was calling in answer to my last email. I told him totally honestly that I'd rather speak with someone else, but that I was willing to hear him out. He asked about meter readings I had supplied earlier as despite 2 Scottish Power employees stating they would amend my record - no-one actually had. I told him that I doubted his or Scottish Power's ability to do anything, and quoted the above meter readings and the fiasco surrouding the visit by Frank which lead to the developments around the burning fuse. He in turn tried to waffle his way through to which I replied that indeed he was entitled to his opinion as much as I was entitled to mine.

He asked who had said that there was a fault in my electrical system. I told him about Stefan and the couple of telephone calls I'd had from him. I re-iterated my wish to have a separate connection to the mains. He said that as I had mentioned that in my email he had inquired about that possibility already and was able to say that this can be done usually at cost to the complainant, but under the circumstances the fee might possibly be waived. He said he would call Stefan and get back to me.

About five minutes later he called back saying that he had spoken to Stefan and that Stefan was scheduled to call me tomorrow anyway. I asked that if possible could it be in the afternoon as I had business to attend to in the morning. He said he would try to get Stefan to call me either today or Monday instead. He hasn't called as yet today so I guess it's to be Monday.

  • Contact Attempts

Just sent an online complaint message to Scottish Power to try to find out what is going on.

I've heard nothing from them since the guy who said he was going to have my complaint re-instated by contacting the "Superior group" who were apparently dealing with my complaint, but closed my complaint instead.

Sadly I fear this has just been another stalling tactic by Scottish Power as they truly don't know what to do next. I have, through determination and endurance proved my case and they just don't want to pay out. For them sadly I am just not going to go away. My complaint is justified, it is genuine and they still won't accept defeat.
